The Starbucks drink with the most caffeine is a Venti brewed coffee: 390 mg, per Starbucks’ own menu. Blonde, Pike Place and the dark roast all carry the same amount now, so order the one you like. If you want it iced, a Trenta Cold Brew comes next at 360 mg.

Every figure below comes from Starbucks’ US menu, checked September 2026. The full ranking is first, then the questions people actually argue about: blonde versus dark, iced versus hot, and how to squeeze more caffeine out of the drink you already order.

The most caffeinated Starbucks drinks, ranked

Here is the caffeine in the standard version of each drink, no extra shots, by cup size. Sorted by the Grande, because that is what most people order.

Drink Tall Grande Venti Trenta
Brewed coffee (any roast) 235 mg 315 mg 390 mg n/a
Nitro Cold Brew 215 mg 280 mg n/a n/a
Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso 170 mg 255 mg 340 mg n/a
Caffè Americano 150 mg 225 mg 300 mg n/a
Iced Shaken Espresso 150 mg 225 mg 300 mg n/a
Cold Brew 155 mg 205 mg 310 mg 360 mg
Iced Flat White 130 mg 195 mg 260 mg n/a
Iced Coffee 135 mg 185 mg 265 mg 320 mg
Iced Caffè Mocha 95 mg 175 mg 265 mg n/a
Caffè Latte (hot) 75 mg 150 mg 150 mg n/a

Sizes: Tall is 12 fl oz, Grande 16, a hot Venti 20, an iced Venti 24 and a Trenta 30.

The surprise is the Cortado. It only comes in a Short, and it still carries 230 mg, more than a Grande Americano.

The shaken espressos score high because a Grande gets three shots where a latte gets two. If you order the brown sugar one, the oat milk in it is covered in Starbucks’ oatmilk drinks.

What’s missing: Clover Vertica coffee. It isn’t in Starbucks’ national menu data, it varies by store, and I’m not going to guess at a number.

A quick word on where all this comes from. I live in South Africa and brew my coffee on a Nespresso Vertuo Up, so I have never stood in a US Starbucks line. Every number here is from Starbucks’ own US menu on the date above, and the per-ounce figures further down are my arithmetic on those numbers.

Does blonde roast have more caffeine than dark roast?

Brewed coffee: no, not anymore. Espresso: yes, by 10 mg a shot.

Starbucks lists its Pike Place brewed coffee at 315 mg for a Grande, and the Blonde Roast (now sold as Sunsera) and the featured dark roast carry the exact same figures at every size. The old rule that blonde brewed coffee wins no longer holds on the current menu.

Espresso is different. A Grande Blonde Vanilla Latte is listed at 170 mg against 150 mg for a standard Caffè Latte, and both use two shots. That’s 85 mg per blonde shot against 75 mg for the signature espresso.

Why blonde got its reputation: lighter roasts spend less time in the roaster and lose less mass, so a scoop can hold a little more coffee. The difference is small, and on brewed coffee Starbucks’ own numbers now show none.

The practical version: if you drink lattes or shaken espressos, ask for blonde shots. If you drink brewed coffee, pick the roast you like the taste of.

The strongest coffee at Starbucks, ounce for ounce

The ranking above tells you what one cup does to you. It doesn’t tell you how strong the coffee is, because a Trenta is almost twice the size of a Grande.

Divide the caffeine by the cup size and the order changes:

Drink Size Caffeine Per fl oz
Brewed coffee Grande, 16 oz 315 mg 19.7 mg
Brewed coffee Venti, 20 oz 390 mg 19.5 mg
Nitro Cold Brew Grande, 16 oz 280 mg 17.5 mg
Caffè Americano Venti, 20 oz 300 mg 15.0 mg
Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso Venti, 24 oz 340 mg 14.2 mg
Cold Brew Trenta, 30 oz 360 mg 12.0 mg
Iced Coffee Trenta, 30 oz 320 mg 10.7 mg
Energy Refresher Trenta, 30 oz 175 mg 5.8 mg

Hot brewed coffee is the strongest thing Starbucks pours by the cup. Iced drinks lose on this measure because ice takes up part of the cup.

Straight espresso and the Cortado are left off. Starbucks doesn’t publish its shot volume, and a per-ounce number built on a guess isn’t worth printing.

The most caffeinated iced drinks at Starbucks

If it has to be cold, here’s the order by total caffeine:

  • Trenta Cold Brew: 360 mg
  • Venti Iced Brown Sugar Oatmilk Shaken Espresso: 340 mg
  • Trenta Iced Coffee: 320 mg
  • Venti Cold Brew: 310 mg
  • Grande Nitro Cold Brew: 280 mg (no Venti)

Cold brew beats iced coffee at every size. A Grande is 205 mg against 185 mg, and a Trenta is 360 mg against 320 mg, per Starbucks’ Cold Brew nutrition listing.

Preparing a Nitro Cold Brew at Starbucks

Nitro tops the Grande column for a simple reason. It comes off a tap infused with nitrogen and goes in the cup without ice, so the whole 16 ounces is coffee.

The catch with the Trenta is availability. It’s an iced-only size and not every drink comes in it, which is worth knowing before you ask. Here’s what fits in a Trenta.

How to get more caffeine in any Starbucks drink

Four moves, biggest first:

  1. Order brewed coffee instead of an espresso drink. A Grande brewed coffee at 315 mg is more than double a Grande latte at 150 mg.
  2. Go iced if you want a Venti espresso drink. A hot Venti latte gets two shots, the same as a Grande. An iced Venti gets three: the Iced Caramel Macchiato goes from 150 mg as a Grande to 225 mg as a Venti.
  3. Add a shot. Each one adds 75 mg, or 85 mg if it’s blonde.
  4. Ask for blonde espresso. That’s 10 mg more per shot for no change in the drink.

A hot Venti latte has exactly the same caffeine as a hot Grande. You’re paying for more milk.

Batch drinks are the exception. Cold brew and brewed coffee come out of a batch, so you can’t make the coffee itself stronger. You can add espresso shots on top, though.

Most caffeinated Starbucks drinks that aren’t coffee

The Energy Refreshers win outright: 175 mg in a Trenta, 125 mg in a Grande. Starbucks lists the Mango Dragonfruit Lemonade Energy Refresher at those figures, and the other flavors in the line match it.

A Grande Energy Refresher sits between a Tall latte (75 mg) and a Grande latte (150 mg). Everything else on the non-coffee side of the menu is well below it:

Drink Largest size Caffeine
Energy Refresher (any flavor) Trenta 175 mg
Classic Refresher Trenta 100 mg
Iced Chai Latte Venti 90 mg
Matcha Latte Venti 85 mg
Iced Black Tea Trenta 55 mg
Earl Grey or Royal English Breakfast Any size 40 mg

The classic Refreshers get their caffeine from green coffee extract, which is why a drink that tastes like fruit juice isn’t caffeine-free. The flavor-by-flavor breakdown is in caffeine in each Starbucks Refresher.

Blended drinks are their own mess, with some Frappuccinos carrying espresso and some carrying none. Here’s how much caffeine a Frappuccino has, drink by drink.

How much caffeine is too much?

One Venti brewed coffee is 390 mg. The daily figure the FDA cites for most healthy adults is 400 mg.

That’s 97% of the day in a single cup. The FDA puts 400 mg a day as the amount not generally linked to negative effects for most adults, and notes that people vary a lot in how fast they process it.

If you’re pregnant, the number is lower. ACOG treats less than 200 mg a day as moderate caffeine during pregnancy, and a Grande brewed coffee is over that on its own.

Canned Starbucks drinks with the most caffeine

Everything above is café drinks. The canned and bottled Starbucks drinks sold in grocery stores and gas stations are a separate product line with their own recipes, so the café numbers don’t carry over.

The caffeine is printed on the can. Check it there rather than trusting a figure you saw online, because the recipes change without much notice.

If what you actually want is a strong coffee at home without a machine, you can make strong espresso at home with a moka pot or an AeroPress.
