Starbucks Refresher caffeine comes in three levels now. A Grande Refresher has 50 mg, a Grande Energy Refresher has 125 mg, and you can order any of them caffeine-free. Flavor makes no difference. Size and version do.

Every number below comes from Starbucks’ own US menu data, which I checked in September 2026.

How much caffeine is in a Starbucks Refresher?

Here’s every size, for the standard Refresher and the Energy version:

SizeCupRefresherEnergy Refresher
Tall12 fl oz25 mg100 mg
Grande16 fl oz50 mg125 mg
Venti24 fl oz75 mg150 mg
Trenta30 fl oz100 mg175 mg

Caffeine-free means 0 mg in every size. Ask for it at the counter, or pick “Caffeine-Free” under the caffeine options in the app.

The Energy version adds 75 mg at every size. That’s why a Tall Energy Refresher matches a Trenta regular one at 100 mg.

The Trenta is iced-only, and Refreshers are one of the few drinks you can get in it. Here’s more on the Trenta cup size.

Most caffeine charts online still say a Grande Refresher has 45 mg. Starbucks’ current menu says 50 mg.

I make my coffee on a Nespresso Vertuo Up in South Africa, so I haven’t stood at a US Starbucks counter and ordered one of these. Every number here is from Starbucks’ US menu data and the can and bottle labels, checked on the date above. The per-ounce figures are my own arithmetic.

Do Starbucks Refreshers have caffeine?

Yes, by default. Since April 2026 you can order any Refresher caffeine-free. Starbucks announced the change alongside its Energy Refreshers on April 6, 2026.

Every Refresher now comes three ways. Here’s the Grande figure for each:

  • Caffeine-free: 0 mg.
  • Standard: 50 mg. Starbucks calls this “light caffeine”, and it’s what you get if you don’t say anything.
  • Energy: 125 mg, with added B vitamins.

The caffeine comes from a green coffee extract blend, which is on Starbucks’ ingredient list for every Refresher. Green coffee is unroasted, so you get the caffeine without the coffee taste. That’s why a drink that tastes like fruit juice still wakes you up.

Some of the spring 2026 coverage said the Refreshers were “reformulated as caffeine-free drinks”. They weren’t: caffeine-free became an option. The default still has 50 mg in a Grande.

Does the Pink Drink have caffeine?

Yes. A Grande Pink Drink has 50 mg of caffeine, the same as the Strawberry Açaí Refresher it’s made from. It’s that Refresher base shaken with coconutmilk instead of water.

DrinkTallGrandeVentiTrenta
Pink Drink25 mg50 mg75 mg100 mg
Pink Energy Drink100 mg125 mg150 mg175 mg

The bottled Pink Drink in grocery stores has under 5 mg, per the PepsiCo label. It’s a different drink from the one in the cafe, so don’t assume one tells you about the other.

If you’re ordering for a kid, ask for it caffeine-free. Say it out loud, because the default has caffeine.

Caffeine in every Starbucks Refresher on the menu

Every drink below has 50 mg in a Grande, or 125 mg as an Energy version. The base changes the taste and the calories. It doesn’t change the caffeine.

BaseDrinks on the US menu
WaterStrawberry Açaí, Mango Dragonfruit and Mango Strawberry Refreshers
LemonadeStrawberry Açaí, Mango Dragonfruit and Mango Strawberry Lemonade Refreshers, plus the Cannon Ball Drink
CoconutmilkPink Drink, Dragon Drink, Mango Dream and the Pink Cannon Ball Drink

Every one of those also comes as an Energy version, and I checked all 22 on Starbucks’ menu. The regular ones all come out at 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg from Tall to Trenta. The Energy ones all come out at 100, 125, 150 and 175 mg.

Which Starbucks Refresher has the most caffeine?

A Trenta Energy Refresher, at 175 mg. No flavor has more than another. The Energy version and the cup size decide it.

From most to least:

  1. Trenta Energy, any flavor: 175 mg
  2. Venti Energy: 150 mg
  3. Grande Energy: 125 mg
  4. Tall Energy or Trenta regular: 100 mg
  5. Venti regular: 75 mg
  6. Grande regular: 50 mg
  7. Tall regular: 25 mg
  8. Any size caffeine-free: 0 mg

Per ounce, the Tall Energy Refresher is the strongest drink in the line. That extra 75 mg sits in the smallest cup, so it works out to 8.3 mg an ounce against 5.8 mg for the Trenta.

Starbucks Refresher caffeine vs coffee, soda and energy drinks

Here’s where a Refresher sits against the drinks you’d order instead:

DrinkSizeCaffeinePer fl oz
Coca-Cola12 fl oz can34 mg2.8 mg
Starbucks RefresherGrande, 16 fl oz50 mg3.1 mg
Starbucks Caffè LatteTall, 12 fl oz75 mg6.3 mg
Starbucks Energy RefresherGrande, 16 fl oz125 mg7.8 mg
Red Bull16 fl oz can151 mg9.4 mg
Starbucks Iced CoffeeGrande, 16 fl oz185 mg11.6 mg
Starbucks brewed coffeeGrande, 16 fl oz315 mg19.7 mg

A Grande Refresher has less caffeine than a Tall latte. Ounce for ounce, it’s barely stronger than a Coke, which Coca-Cola puts at 34 mg a 12 oz can.

A Grande Energy Refresher sits just under a same-size Red Bull. That’s 125 mg against the 151 mg Red Bull lists for its 16 oz can.

If you want real caffeine, a Grande brewed coffee has more than six times a Grande Refresher. The full menu, ranked, is in Starbucks drinks with the most caffeine. For blended drinks, here’s the caffeine in each Frappuccino.

Caffeine in canned and bottled Starbucks Refreshers

A 12 oz can of Starbucks Refreshers has 50 mg of caffeine. That’s the same as a Grande in the cafe, in a smaller container.

The grocery-store versions are not all the same, though. Here’s what the labels say:

ProductSizeCaffeine
Refreshers can: Strawberry Lemonade, Black Cherry Limeade or Peach Passion Fruit12 fl oz50 mg
Refreshers concentrate, Strawberry Açaí, mixed 1:1 with water12 fl oz drink35 to 40 mg
Bottled Pink Drink14 fl ozUnder 5 mg
Strawberry Açaí + Lemonade jug8 fl oz servingUnder 5 mg

The can figures are from PepsiCo’s product labels. The concentrate figure is from Starbucks at Home. Both checked September 2026.

The bottles are close to caffeine-free and the cans aren’t. Read the label before you hand one to a kid.

If you want the cans at home, the variety pack is the easy buy. It has four of each flavor, every can at 50 mg.

  • 50 mg of caffeine per 12 oz can, the same as a Grande Refresher in store
  • Four cans each of Strawberry Lemonade, Black Cherry Limeade and Peach Passion Fruit
  • Fruit juice and coconut water, with caffeine from green coffee extract

How much caffeine is too much?

A Trenta Energy Refresher is 175 mg, under half of what the FDA cites as a daily amount for most adults. The FDA puts that figure at 400 mg a day as the level not generally linked to negative effects.

Stacking drinks is where it adds up. EFSA says single doses up to 200 mg raise no safety concerns for healthy adults. A Trenta Energy plus a Grande regular Refresher comes to 225 mg in one sitting.

Kids are simpler. The American Academy of Pediatrics says avoiding caffeine is the best choice for all kids, and the FDA notes that medical experts advise against energy drinks for children and teens. So a kid’s order is any Refresher, caffeine-free, and never the Energy version.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get Starbucks Refreshers without caffeine?

Yes. Since April 2026 every Refresher can be made caffeine-free, at 0 mg in any size. Ask for it, or choose “Caffeine-Free” in the app.

Can kids drink Starbucks Refreshers?

The regular version has 50 mg in a Grande, and pediatricians recommend kids avoid caffeine. Order it caffeine-free and it’s the same drink without the caffeine.

Is 45 mg of caffeine a lot?

No. A can of Coke has 34 mg, so 45 mg is about a can and a third. The current Grande Refresher is 50 mg, not 45, which is still well under a Tall latte at 75 mg.

How much caffeine is in a Grande dragonfruit Refresher?

50 mg in a Grande Mango Dragonfruit Refresher, and the same in the Lemonade version and the Dragon Drink. The Energy versions have 125 mg.

Is a Refresher healthier than coffee?

It has far less caffeine, but more sugar. Starbucks lists a Grande Strawberry Açaí Refresher at 90 calories and 21 g of sugar, and a Grande Pink Drink at 140 calories and 25 g. A black brewed coffee has no sugar at all.

Does the Dragon Drink have caffeine?

Yes. A Grande Dragon Drink has 50 mg, and the Dragon Energy Drink has 125 mg. It’s the Mango Dragonfruit base with coconutmilk.

Short version: a Grande Refresher is 50 mg, an Energy Refresher is 125 mg, and caffeine-free is 0. The most you can get is 175 mg in a Trenta Energy.

Figures checked September 2026. Starbucks and PepsiCo both change recipes, so check the app or the label if it matters to you.
